[...] You read that right; Google has taken the relationship with webmasters into another level by starting a trial program to notify some webmasters if their sites have been penalized. Only catch is that you’ll to sign up for Google Sitemaps service. But I wouldn’t call that a catch. As a matter of fact, I highly recommend you to sign up with Google Sitemaps service.
I should also mention that submitting your URL manually is not actually recommended because it could be detrimental to your own page ranking. By submitting your URL, you are telling Google that your page is new. Google won’t index the page unless someone is linking to the page.

I personally do not use manual submissions. What I've been doing is to place a link from other high PageRank pages. When Googlebot crawls those high PageRank pages, my blog enjoys a good vote right from the beginning from those high PageRank pages.

For the Geocities, I am not saying to use a redirector, I am recommending creating a page with content and put your link somewhere on the page. Remember, Google penalizes page redirection. But without good content, Yahoo! spider, slurp won't have your Geocities pages indexed as fast either.

Most people are actually intimated with the prospect of creating a sitemap for their blog. But it’s actually fairly straight forward to do using the plugin I recommended.

Using a sitemap for your blog gives you the upper hand right of the bat, as compare to submitting your URL manually. Because you have the chance to inform Googlebot to crawl your blog every time it’s updated. Googlebot will learn from this and it’ll crawl your blog according to how frequently you update it. The good thing is everything is done automatically.

Hi Danny,

Yea, that's what I've recommended actually, i.e. to register with Google map.

http://www.sabahan.com/2006/03/19/how-to-easily-keep-google-updated-when-you-change-or-add-new-content-to-you-blog/

I've explained the benefits of registration in details. Submiting URLs isn't very effective especially if you have like 30 new posts per day across your blog network. There's no excuse not to register since it's so easy to do using the plugin.

Posting frequently does prompt Googlebot to crawl your site more often. I agree with the submiting good content part as I've been recommending it in this blog, no doubt.

But what you consider good content may not be according to the spiders. I am talking about the behaviour of Googlebot and slurp towards your sites, i.e frequently updated and in combination with the full use of the Sitemaps. Not the other way around as you mentioned "audience to drive you site up the search engine". Audience don't drive your site up, but good SEO practice and frequently updated site will bring the dough.

I have sites that I consider have good content but they are not crawled frequently by Googlebot. You know why.

I've over 30 sites which I monitor. Based on my own experience , frequently updated sites get crawled more often as I've explained in this article. I wouldn't know that if I didn't track my results would I?

Anyway, thanks for the input. Appreciate it.

A note about Google Sitemaps. You could provide a SiteMap page located on your website for them to scan. Or if you don't have one, they also allow you to just submit your URL. However, Google sitemaps require you to register before utilizing it's service.

As for Geocities, so you're saying we should create a redirector on the Geocities website service so that our real websites/blogs are more easily found?

I don't really think posting frequently works as well as good content. As mentioned by most probloggers like Darren Rowse or Yaro Starak, without good content you'll never get enough audience to drive you site up the search engine.

But very good takes on some of options available for anyone aiming to get higher rankings on search engines. :)

Cheers.
