The Correct Anchor Text Will Get You On The First Page of Google Search Results

March 20, 2007 by

I can help but feel a little jealous about JohnChow.com :) . In his latest blog post he described how he managed to be on the first page on Google search result for the term “make money online”, barely four days after he changed the rules for reviewing his blog.

You can view the top anchor text people used to link to your blog through Google Webmaster Central.

Since the ranking is dynamic; I believe John Chow will go up the rank as more and more people use the “make money online” anchor text to link to him.

I used to be ranked number one for the phrase “free money” for one of my sites and this brought in quite a good number of targeted traffic for a while to the site. But the competition gets stiffer and the site was beaten by the new kids on the block.

If you want to be ranked highly for certain keywords in Google’s search results, it’s better to target phrases which contain several keywords instead of one (or two) because it’s less competitive.

While keywords in the anchor text is one of the important factors in determining your ranking, on page factors cannot be discounted either.

As John says

Getting everyone to link to my blog with my anchor text was just part of the puzzle. I had to make some changes to the blog to speed my charge to page 1 of Google. The first thing I did was change the title of the blog home page from John Chow dot Com – The Miscellaneous Ramblings of a Dot Com Mogul to Make Money Online with John Chow dot Com.

The second thing I had to do was to make sure some posts on the front page had the targeted keywords in them. Ideally, they should be in the blog post title because more weight is placed on that. Now you understand the evilness behind some of my post titles. In addition, the targeted keywords should be repeated a few times in the article.

Also make sure that the phrase you choose is related to your niche.

Isn’t this considered to be Google Bomb? like what happened when people typed in “failure” in google and Bush was on the first page sometime back.

Sounds like it but Googlebomb is actually a different thing. It has been defused also.
