March 24 World Shutdown Day – A No Computer Day

March 22, 2007 by

We already have the CSS naked day where webmasters turn off their style sheets from their website for one day on April 05 every year.

Then someone came up with another idea of a day without something – this time it’s a day without a computer.

The day is supposed to be on March 24 which falls on this coming Saturday. People running mission critical operations should stay away from participating as I think this move is for those using computers personally. You wouldn’t want to shut down your company’s servers now would you?

At first thought, this seems like a fun idea to be part of. It’s apparently one of the biggest global experiments ever to take place on the Internet; or so claims the organizer on their website.

What will happen if we all participate? Can you survive for 24 hours without my computer?

On the global scale, I don’t think shutting down our personal computers for a day will have a major impact. One thing for sure; it won’t be one of the electric utilities company’s favorite days.

Since it falls on Saturday, most people will probably be away from their computer anyway. But those bloggers and computer users who work on the Internet would probably find it’s a little hard comply.

I headed over to their forum to see what people were talking about and there, I was greeted with all sorts of spam postings. It made me wonder about the seriousness of the organizer organizing that event.

Yes I think I can live without my computer for a day but I don’t think I’ll participate. From where I am sitting I can’t see if it’ll make any different in anything.

Another World something Day that I know of is the World Jump Day which was an event scheduled last year on July 20, 2006.

At that time the organization claimed to have 600 million people from the western hemisphere jump simultaneously. The idea is to move the Earth out of its orbit and into a new one, one that would not cause global warming.

Everyone can participate by jumping at the specified time. It’s an entertaining idea but one that’s totally irrational. It’s not surprisingly to see this turned out to be a hoax.
