Server Migration Completed

April 23, 2007 by · 3 Comments

At last, the server migration is finally completed. It’s quite a relief to think that I do not have to wake up in the morning and find my server has been offline for six hours or more.

As a non expert in server administration, it took me close to three weeks to complete the transfer. The built-in transfer function in WHM sometimes failed so this delayed the process. The transfer is made complicated by the fact that I am transferring from two different control panels i.e: EnsimPro to WHM/Cpanel. I could have paid someone to do this but I decided to do it myself so that I could learn how to migrate accounts between servers. Downloading files from the old server and uploading them into the new one via FTP isn’t the proper way to do it.

Malaysia Securities Commission Investor Alert List

April 19, 2007 by · 10 Comments

The Malaysia securities commission (SC) or Suruhanjaya Sekuriti is a body set up to regulate and develop the Malaysian capital market.

If you are an investor in an Internet investment scheme, you can refer to an alert list from their website to check whether the scheme your are involved with is authorized nor approved under the Malaysian securities laws.

The following list of websites is conducting Internet investment schemes by illegally taking deposit, an offence under Malaysian law. I’ve reproduced the current list for reference, latest list available here.

The SC has the authority to freeze bank accounts belong to any of the schemes if they are located in Malaysia . SC is working closely with the National ICT Security and Emergency Response Center (NISER) to enforce the regulations.

The the list is by no means complete. I believe there are many other websites that are still being investigated.

Is Swiss Mutual Fund & Swiss Cash a Scam?

April 17, 2007 by · 1,534 Comments

I was reading the readers’ letters section in our local newspaper recently where a guy wrote in voicing his concern over the authorities’ negative attitude towards the Internet investment schemes that are becoming the latest craze here in Malaysia.

I can’t recall exactly what he wrote but it went something like these schemes offer an opportunity for the low income group to improve their livelihood while participating in the country’s ICT development.. The authorities plans to crackdown these scheme were unwarranted according to him.

I have nothing against improving livelihood through ICT but what concern me was he didn’t realise those schemes got him off on the wrong foot.

Swiss Mutual Fund or Swiss Cash is one of the most popular of such schemes that promise big returns.

Internet Investment Scheme Banned By National Fatwa Council

April 15, 2007 by · 19 Comments

I came across a shocking headline while reading AFP news recently which says the Malaysia fatwa against Internet trading.

The news reads :

“A Muslim council in Malaysia has issued a religious ruling or fatwa banning people from using the Internet to trade shares or makes investments.”

Regardless of one’s religion, this banning is worrying to those who are working and doing business on the Internet in Malaysia.

I started to imagine how this could seriously hamper the development of e-commerce and the future of doing business via the Internet in Malaysia.

My worries soon evaporated as I checked the local news sources and was relieved to find out that this banning applies only to Internet investments that promised a fixed return such as those containing elements of a pyramid or ponzi scheme. One of these is the widely popular Swiss Cash Mutual Fund.

Breaking News: Google Acquires the Internet

April 15, 2007 by · Leave a Comment

You may have heard that Google has acquired DoubleClick, an advertising company which also own the affiliate network/search agency Performic for $3.1 billion.

If you are an AdSense publisher or an AdWords advertiser, this acquisition will likely change the way how you make money in the future.

In addition to text ads, video ads, radio ads, TV ads, and so on, you’ll now have the ability to spread your advertising message to as many channels as you like and cover every nook and cranny of the Internet, provided that you have the money to do so.

At the same time, publishers will be able to monetize their content no matter what platform or website niche they manage.

OK, obviously those views are a little simplistic.

DoubleClick is the largest banner advertising network in the world and with the acquisition it seems Google is resurrecting this dying form of Internet advertising.
