Top 10 Excuses People Make That Stop Them From Making Money Online

May 23, 2007 by

There are many people who dream of becoming their own boss and achieving financial freedom by working on the Internet – who doesn’t. But many find it difficult if not impossible to accomplish this dream.

It starts with some doubts people have in their mind which prevent them from taking actions. By not taking actions, these doubts become self-fulfilling prophecy that perpetuates the notion that you can’t make money online.

Of course it’s perfectly normal to be doubtful. However, unless you believe that you really can make good money online; your dream will never come true.

You see I have been working online for couple of years now. Even now, when I launch a new project, sometimes I have doubts whether it will succeed or not. However, instead of contemplating on what’s possible and what’s not, I went ahead and just do it.

The following are 10 excuses preventing many people from making good money online.

Excuse 1: I don’t have the qualification or I’m not smart enough to run my own successful Internet business

Let’s be real here. Perhaps running an online business is not for everyone. But if you are reading this– running a successful online business is within your capabilities. As long as you have the desire and will to learn, your qualification does not dictate what you can or can’t do.

I am an engineer by qualification not a computer programmer. However, I probably earn much more than the average computer programmers in Malaysia from my own software business. That’s possible because I have the desire to learn. I taught myself how to program and use this new skill to achieve my dream of running a successful Internet business.

I am not saying that you should learn programming or have to be an engineer in order to make money. Just follow your own passion and the money will follow. If you are passionate about blogging, take it seriously and see how far you can go with it. You’ll be suprise with what you are capable of.

If you want to do something, but do not have the time or skill to do it, you can always hire someone to do it for your. I do that too and that’s what I call outsourcing.

Don’t wait for the opportunity to come, create your own. It could be earning from successful blog, create your own ebooks, join and profit from affiliate programs and so on.

Excuse 2: I don’t have money lying around to start a new Internet business

Who says you need a lot of money to start an online business? It was probably expensive before but the cost of entry is getting cheaper. All you need is a computer, an Internet connection which you probably already have if you are reading this.

All you need next is an idea. In term of setting up the website itself, you can get a domain name for less than US10 per year. You can do the web design yourself or use many of the free templates online.

You can even start everything for free like what Amit Agarwal the owner of one of the most popular Indian blogs. I believe he is earning quite a substantial income from his blog which is hosted using the free blog hosting service at blogspot.com.

(I’d personally recommend you to purchase your own domain when setting up a website)

Excuse 3: I have a full time job and little time to spare to run an Internet business.

I understand this can be very limiting. After working hard all day long – there’s barely enough time to sit down in front of the computer and start a business. That’s before I bring the family into the picture.

Think about this – there are many folks out there who are in the same situation like you.

But they manage to create new income stream online and eventually quit their day job. I am not recommending you to quit your job now, only do that when your online income stabilises and you feel confortable earning a living working online. But it’s up to you, I am here not to tell you what you should or should not do. Just make sure the risk you’re going to take is calculated.

Try to find idle times during the day, and burn the midnight oil and see what happens.

It’s up to you really, if you really want something badly, you can always find the time to make it happen.

Excuse 4: I don’t have a product or service to sell

While I believe your ultimate goal should be to sell something, you don’t need anything to sell right away. Well it’s up to you really.

If you don’t have products or services to sell, you can always join affiliate programs. Or, you can always start blogging and offer useful information from your blog and earn money from AdSense, review post, or text link ads.

While you do that you can always try to come up with a product or service to sell. I see this is done by Ades.

If you are passionate about blogging, you could end up selling nothing but advertising space. That’s good too.

Excuse 5: I don’t see myself as an expert at anything

You don’t have to be an expert at anything to begin with. As long as you have the DESIRE to learn, one year from now you can be an expert at anything that you want.

All the information you want to learn is at your finger tips. Find your passion, and dwell in it and as they said follow your passion and the money will follow.

Excuse 6: Those who tell others how to make money are the only people making money on the Internet

To some extend that statement is quite true but there are a lot more people who are making money from other niches besides the marketing niches. Unless you are an experience Internet marketer I wouldn’t recommend you to start your venture in this niche. If this does not make sense to you, read this

Excuses 7: There’s too much competition so it’s not worth trying

If this is your excuse, you’ve failed to see that your idea is actually worth pursuing because it has been proven to be successful one by others.

When I tried to come up with a new software idea – I didn’t try to invent anything new I just find what popular and try to do it better.

But you have to be realistic, no matter how good you are in programming, creating another new Office suite to compete with Microsoft Office is just not practical. In fact it’s the best way to lose money.

If you come up with an idea that there are already people doing it, think of the ways how you can do it better. Deliver benefits that are not offered by any competitions. If you are a blogger, write something that differentiates yourself from the other bloggers in the same niche as you.

Excuse 8: The only way I can succeed is if I secure the top search engine rankings for my keywords

That may be true but it’s not the only way to achieve success online. I know it’s getting harder these days to secure top position for your chosen keywords so you’ll need to look at other options as far as marketing your product and service is concern.

Use social bookmarking sites such Digg to your advantage, purchase traffic from pay per click search engines, write articles that got mentioned by others and so on – the possibilities are endless.

It’s not impossible to make a five figure monthly income from a website that has less than 150 visitors per day. All you need is a good product, a great website that sells and laser targeted traffic. I’ve seen people doing that.

Excuse 9: I need to spend a lot in advertising to get any results

How about free? The Internet allows you to market your product or service for nothing. Again, you can try the social bookmarking sites, joint venture; create a mailing list, set up auto responders and so on.

If you may need to set aside a budget for pay per click search engines marketing, realize that what’s more important here is your conversion rates not the amount you spend.

Let me give you an example. I am currently running a test on AdWords promoting one product. For every dollar I spend, I earn five dollars in profit. Problem is the search volume for that keyword is very low so a conversion doesn’t happen every day.

Nonetheless, I hope you get what I mean – you don’t need a big advertising budget to get any results.

Excuse 10: I’ve tried this and that and I always fail

Sometimes people fail because they lack focus or focused on the wrong business idea, and expect to get rich quick. If something doesn’t work they quit right away not realizing that it’s probably their last hurdle when success is just around the corner.

Like everything else, you need to start from the ground up. Focus on your goal and work hard to achieve it.

Failure teaches you valuable lessons that help you improve yourself.

If you are not making good money online, you may find yourself making any of the excuse above. If you do, stop right away and start believing in yourself and start taking actions now.
