Display Targeted AdSense Ads Behind Password Protected Areas On Your Site

June 7, 2007 by

Previously, if you wanted to display targeted AdSense behind password protection areas on your site you would be out of luck.

The best you could get was untargeted ads that often resulted in low click through rates. Worst still, you get PSA or Public Service Ads that won’t generate income.

Recently Google AdSense has rolled out a new feature that allows publishers to place targeted ads on pages behind a login screen by following an authentication process. This feature was already made available to a selected few beta testers since November 2006.

Those selected will find a new sub-tab called ‘Site Authentication’ under the ‘AdSense Setup’ tab in their AdSense account. Currently, I am not one of the lucky ones to have this feature enable in my account.

In order to use this feature, you’ll need to allow AdSense crawler to access those protected area.

If you are trying to monetize pages that a located behind a login such as protected forums, premium content on your sites, webmail and so on – you should find this feature useful.
