Can Your Competitor Really Sabotage SEO Rankings?

July 2, 2007 by

Philipp Lessen of Google Blogoscoped has pointed out an interesting article published by Forbes about ways your site can be sabotaged by your competitor.

Google’s help files mentioned that there’s almost nothing a competitor can do to harm your ranking or have your site removed. Which also means it’s not impossible for a competitor to do something that could hurt your site’s rankings.

Due to the democratic nature of the web, your competitor could post a lot of spammy links from around the web pointing to your websites. A sudden increase in the backward links count to your website will certainly raise Google’s red flag which could result in immediate drop in your rankings, among others.

Philipp summarizes the main points from the Forbes article about ways how your competitor could potentially cause havoc to your rankings by doing any of the following.

  1. Reporting a competitor for using paid links (if they do indeed use them)
  2. Filing a copyright complaint against a competitor
  3. Push a competitor into the duplicate content trap by republishing their content on a “stronger” site
  4. Launching a Denial of Service attack against competition servers
  5. Commit click-fraud against a competitor’s AdWords campaign, wasting their budget

A Malaysian blogger; Kahsoon.com was once sabotaged by someone who was republishing his content on another blog. I tend to believe however the content theft incident wasn’t then main reason for the drop in his rankings because he got the stronger blog than the duplicate one. Rather his own SEO practice which tend to be on the spammy side had caused more harm to his search engine rankings.

All this happen because the “world” that we call “World Wide Web” are anarchy – means there are no “police” that can control what going on there. What we can do is filled a complaint and wait for the result, in the mean time the result cause by other already take effect.
