21 Reasons Why Your Users Click On Your AdSense Ads
July 31, 2007 by Gaman
- They are genuinely interested in it
- They see highly relevant ads to your content
- They thought it’s part of your content
- It’s an accidental click
- Because they notice it
- They want to support your site
- They are tricked into clicking it
- Because you opt for image ads which potentially have a higher value than the corresponding set of text ads.
- They thought your link unit was part of your navigation menu
- They thought the AdSense ads were part of the search result when you use AdSense For Search
- You rotate colour palettes which add freshness to your ads
- You use more wide ad formats than their taller counterparts
- You use multiple ad units if you page contain lots of text
- You have an optimised number of ad units occupied by top paying advertisers
- You keep your filter list small. More filtering means fewer ads appear on you pages which decrease your potential earnings.
- You don’t clutter your page with competing ads
- They want to sabotage you
- They are envious and like to see you banned
- Because you moved you ad from the right side to the left, close to the body of your content
- Because you have more visitors coming from the search engines than regular visitors
- Because you have a great content

I think you pretty much touched on everything there. This is a great post because even though a lot of people know what AdSense is, they still have no idea what makes people click!
yeah right i agree hehe i normally click the add because they trick me
I don’t agree with #21. I don’t think anyone will click on your adsense ads because you have great content. I think mostly that if you have great content they won’t pay any attention to the adsense ads at all, and sometimes when your content isn’t so great, they’ll click the adsense ads to try and find what they were originally looking for!
What’s the difference between “regular visitors” and those who come from SE. I suppose most of the regulars once arrived to your site through an SE (like me for instance) and then slowly adapted to become regulars.
And also, what type of effect does good content have to CTR? I though the crappier the content, the more likley the user is to find something to get him out of there. Hehe, better start decreasing the quality of your posts…
Good questions. If you have many regular visitors, they are likely blinded to the position of ads over time. In contrast search engine visitors are mostly new to your site and often look at your site differently. They are more likely to click on your ads,
Everton of Connected Internet has seen this happens at his blog, you can read his experience here Why My Adsense Earnings Are Better Than Other Blogs
As for the second question. You are right to some extent. AdSense can be a way out for readers when the content is crap. On the other hand, great content enables more relevant ads and as you would expect this often leads better CTRs. I guess it’s also depends what type of audience you have.
Gaman I think you should included also People click ads because they are interested in the ads. Some click the ads if the ads bring value to consumers.
Correct me if mistakes.
That’s my first point actually
haha…yups i missed it..
btw looks like I need to do something with the overlapping content and AdSense rectangle unit
22. because they are interested to donate some money to you. but not from their pocket
yeah that sounds true! haha
Because they don’t realised it is an ad! they thought it is part of your menu or list..
I keep sending fellow bloggers to this post, and they love it! Keep up the good lists!
