I do believe it is an internal problem with Google. My sitemaps and robots.txt file worked fine for many sites until August 03 when google stopped crawling. Forums are filled with threads about the same problem. I notice that if you manually update your sitemaps file, you can accidentally make typos in the schemas and screw things up.
