Sabahan.com Demographic Prediction According to MSN adCenter

June 28, 2006 by · 3 Comments

According to the Demographics Prediction tool from Microsoft adCenter Labs, 63 percent of my visitors are male which I think might be right. In term of age, 23.43 percent visitors are between 25 to 34 years old.

Interestingly adCenter predicted that 16.13 percent of my visitors are 50 years old and over. I don’t know this blog has such a big an appeal to this demographic.

Anybody reading this post belongs to this age group?

For another site that I manage, MSN adCenter predicts that 95 percent of my visitors are female. The gender poll I conducted agrees that the majority was female but only 62 percent of them were female.

While the main age group should be between 18-24 years old, adCenter predicted that the biggest readership is between 25 to 34 years old.

Most Microsoft Workers Search With Google

June 22, 2006 by · Leave a Comment

Interesting news article:

An overwhelming majority of Microsoft employees use rival Google to search the Internet, bloggers and a Web metrics company claimed Tuesday.

Andrew Hitchcock, a 19-year-old student at the University of Washington, got the ball rolling by posting Google Analytics statistics on visitors to his Web site. Of the users originating from Microsoft’s domain who reached Hitchcock’s site via a search engine, 80 percent came through Google. Only 20 percent used a Microsoft search engine (either MSN’s or the Live.com’s).

May be I’ll check my own Google Analytics stats to see how it compares to the results.

What Does The Gates Retirement Really Mean?

June 20, 2006 by · Leave a Comment

So what will happen to Microsoft without Bill?

“The press is going to write about this, but I don’t think Gates stepping away is that big a deal in terms of business impact,” IDC senior research analyst Richard Shim told internetnews.com. “If Steve Jobs said he was going to leave Apple, that would be huge because he makes a lot of the decisions. Gates’ last big development decision was probably Windows 95.”

So no impact? I suppose this is because Microsoft is so big, decisions are made at all levels. Most of the pivotal decisions weren’t made by Bill Gates alone, so people are used to having or rather not having Bill Gates visible upfront everytime a major decisions are made.

Anyway, you can read the full story here: What Does The Gates Retirement Really Mean?

For the past few days, the blogosphere has been filled with stories about the Windows evangelist and Microsoft blogging poster boy Robert Scoble. He is leaving Microsoft for a new job at PodTech.Net.

At the time of this writing, “scoble” is the second most searched keyword behind “World Cup”.

Robert Scoble rose to prominence because of the blogging he did once he joined Microsoft.

Anyway, Mary Jo Foley of Microsoft Watch had a chance to ask Scoble five final questions regarding his experience while working at Redmond which I think make for an interesting read.

The Google AdSense API

June 6, 2006 by · 1 Comment

Google AdSense API was actually released on May 31st. I might as well give it a mention now just in case you haven’t read about it somewhere.

The AdSense API is a free beta service that enables you to integrate Google AdSense into your website offerings. Using the AdSense API, you can enable users to perform a variety of AdSense functions without ever leaving your website. Users can create or manage their AdSense accounts, modify their AdSense ads, and view ad performance and earnings reports.

The AdSense API is ideal for developers whose users create their own web content through web hosting, web publishing, blogging, and social networking applications.

If you own a site in wich you register users who manage web content, and your site has more than 100,000 daily page views, you may qualify for participation in this program.

Is MSN Spaces the largest blogging service?

May 27, 2006 by · 6 Comments

Apparently that’s the case according to a recent press release by Microsoft.

MSN® Spaces is the most widely used blogging service worldwide with more than 100 million unique visitors, according to data released today by comScore Networks Inc. of Reston, Va., an independent Internet audience measurement and consulting company.

comScore World Metrix’s proprietary audience report for April 2006 showed the total number of unique visitors to MSN Spaces has more than doubled in the past 12 months, from 41.65 million to 101 million.* Figures compiled by comScore Media Metrix indicate that during April 2006, nearly one in seven Internet users worldwide had visited MSN Spaces.

It’s hard to believe that it even surpasses Blogger.com if this statistics is correct.

Is anybody here using MSN Spaces as their main blogging platform?

MSN Spaces can be found at http://spaces.msn.com.

Microsoft Office 2007 Beta 2 Is Available For Download

May 25, 2006 by · 1 Comment

office2007.gif

Microsoft has posted links on the Office website where you can download Office 2007 Beta or order a DVD containing the 2007 bundle.

Depending on the suite components you choose, you could be downloading anywhere between 75MB to 1GB of the suite or you can request a DVD from Microsoft.

While the download is free, the DVD will cost you $4.95 plus $2 postage in the US.

To download Beta 2 or order a DVD, users must register with a Windows Live ID (formerly Passport) username and password.

This is tempting; I might grab the download later just to experience the interesting new Office 2007 interface.

Microsoft Releases Windows Media Player 11

May 23, 2006 by · 1 Comment

Microsoft has released Windows Media Player 11 (beta) for Windows XP and integrated its online music store named URGE, a joint venture with MTV Networks into the player.

Version 11 only plays music files that support Microsoft’s DRM (Digital Rights Management) software, which means it won’t be compatible with iTunes.

Other features of this software include CDs ripping, CDs/DVDs playback, video playback, download music files to your portable MP3 player and more.

Windows OS System Requirements from 1990 to 2006

May 23, 2006 by · Leave a Comment

There’s an interesting article over at TechWeb regarding the changes in Windows system requirements for every major releases of the operating system.

It seems like yesterday (at least for me :) ) that we only needed a computer with at least 386DX and 4MB memory to run Windows 95. Apparently Windows 3.0 (released May 1990) required 640K conventionally memory to run!

But of course, it’s not unusual for Microsoft to understate system requirements even when the minimum hardware has difficulty running the OS. Typically we do not want to run Windows on computers with the minimum hardware requirements.

As Windows’ demands more computing power, hardware prices continue to plummet. Contrary to what we may think, a desktop able to run Windows XP for example cost only 42 percent of the price of a computer running Windows 95 eleven years ago.

Relevancy Rules in Top Sponsored Ads

There’s an interesting post over at Out of My Gord about an eye tracking study conducted by them.

They went one step further than the previous one that came up with the Golden Triangle moniker.

The study showed that getting your site placed above the fold inside the Golden Triangle doesn’t guarantee a good CTR, you have to deliver relevancy as well in order to capture a searcher’s click.
