How to get a #1 ranking in Google

Posted on 28th April, 2006

So you want to get the number one position in Google search page results (Who doesn’t’)? Memwg.com has posted some tips to help you achieve this goal.

The tips include:

  • Keywords in URL somewhere, ideally separated by hyphens
  • Keywords in title, near or at the beginning
  • Keywords in headings
  • Keywords near the top of the page

While the tips themselves are quite basic, they can still offer some useful guidelines especially if you are a newbie in search engine optimization (SEO).

Securing the top spots or just having your site appear on the first page of search engine result pages (SERPs) for some popular keywords can bring in tons of traffic to your site.

I’ve experienced this personally because one of my sites used to be ranked highly at the Google for the keyword “free mp3” and “free mp3 downloads” and many other related keywords.

My freebie site at AbsolutelyFreebies.com is currently listed on the first page for the keywords “freebies” and “free money”.

At the time of this writing, Sabahan.com is also ranked number two for the keyword “sabahan” in Google. I am telling you I am going to take the top spot before the end of this year LOL that is if Google ranking algorithm remains unchanged.

Anyway, I am not telling you this to boast. I am just saying that a good SEO practice together with good and relevant contents can do wonders to your page ranking.

Of course some of my high rankings are probably accidental, but in no way that they are unintentional. I hope that makes sense 🙂

But don’t spend too much time obsessing over securing the top spots. What you should do more is built up your content and follow the SEO tips for every page you have.

Those are the base factors, but in all honestly THE most important factor is missing.

Anchor text of incoming links and the PR of the incoming links, if you have good neighbourhood links coming in with a high PR and your chosen anchor text, you will get top 3 placing easily, the above factors just help for normal organic search results.

Exactly 🙂 I didn’t mention that because the page only talks about on page factor. Perhaps I’ll write my own tips later. But keep in mind that to get top 3 placing for very competitive keywords aren’t as easy.

Frankly … on page optimization is secondary. And here’s proof.

Search for “download here”. Top result will point you to Apple Quicktime download.

Search the page for the phrase “download here”. Clearly shows that anchor text from high ranking sites play a big part on getting you to the top.

What is more interesting is taking over a high ranking #1 spot. You will need to do lots of research and it will take time but not impossible. Just copy the top site and make it better.

Being #1 on Google for “toxicle” is not something to shout about 😛

If you ask me, keyword research is top on my list 🙂

  • Gaman says:

toxcile, well we kind of know that actually. If we are talking about Apple Quicktime, it’s no suprise it’s number one for the keyword “download here”.

But simply having your keywords in anchor text in a few places around the net won’t get you the top ranking either.

Howabout number of links to a website? perhaps this is the most important one…. 🙂

  • Gaman says:

Sometimes, you don’t have to have many pages to get number one linking to you, the more importing thing is to get linkd from the important pages.

Having many links pointing to you from pages with low importance can actually hurt your site.
