No More Kontera ads at Sabahan.com

Posted on 16th May, 2007

Recently, I conducted a poll to find out what my readers think about the the Kontera ads here at Sabahan.com.

There are only 12 people responded to the poll at the time of this writing. I don’t have to wait until I get more response to know what the majority of my readers think about the Kontera ads.

As you can see below, 67% find them annoying and suggested that I should removed them. I see this positively in that, my readers actually care about my content. Displaying Kontera ads sacrifice the ‘good’ experience they’ve been enjoying so far.

25% respondents are neutral. Any site owner would be happy if more people come from this group but unfortunately that’s not always the case 🙂

I personally find Kontera ads annoying too but feel that there’s no harm in giving them a try.

The CPM is about $0.76, much lower than what I get from AdSense. Of course, I would need to run Kontera longer in order to acquire a more reliable CPM data but I expect AdSense to emerge at the top in term of the CPM values.

Now I do believe, certain sites could benefit from Kontera ads. Just that it’s not suitable here at Sabahan.com

Regardless of what ads you display at your blog, it’s important that they do not annoy your readers.

I believe people click on my AdSense ads because they find them relevant to the content.

On the other hand, there will always be someone who find any ads annoying. Unless they are in the majority, you better do something about it. Otherwise, just realize that you just can’t please anyone can you?

I’ve rejected several Text Link Ads request either because they contain mature content, spammy or totally unrelated to my blogs (like Viagra stuff). I may be throwing easy money out the window, but I am not after a short term financial gain; I am in this for the long run.

Kontera ads are ugly and prevent smooth reading.

I dislike them at my BestWebsites.com.my and OnlineReadingCenter.com, HealthyPages.info but their checks were good.

I’ve started using Kontera but I’m using Lucias KonteraControl plugin which allows me to specify which catagories I don’t want Kontera to show up in ever or for a certain amount of time, and it also allows me to specify when Kontera ads can start showing up on my site.

Since I post frequently on most of my sites I’ve set it so that the ads don’t show up until a post is two days old. I can even specify when the ads show up in comments.

In this way I can keep my regular loyal readers happy who tend to read new posts on the front page while making money from those who come to my sites using search engines and tend to hit older posts.

By not using Kontera in my most recent posts I might not make as much as some, but it helps me keep my regular readers happy this way. Best of both worlds I think!

BTW I didn’t leave a link to Lucia’s plugin because I don’t like it when people leave extra links in my comments – you can google KonteraControl plugin and find it easily if you are interested. 🙂
