What Happen to LiewCF.com?
Posted on 8th May, 2006
Today while I was trying to visit LiewCF.com, I was initially redirected to LiewCF.WordPress.com, and later to a placeholder for the domain.
According to Liew, his web server has suffered a hard disk crash.
I’ve read somewhere that LiewCF.com is hosted at Hive.com.my (correct me if I am wrong). Apparently the server has been experiencing a hard disk failure since May 2nd. What is taking them so long to restore the backup? I think this is simply unacceptable.
If I am not mistaken, this is not the first time Liew has experienced a problem with his web host which has caused his blog to go offline or worst, unrecoverable.
This incident has further lessened my confidence in our local web hosting companies’ ability to offer a reliable service (I’ve never used one by the way). Having said that, I am sure there are good ones out there.
Imagine if this happen to us, without any backup, all our effort would go down the drain in a blink of an eye.
What can we do to avoid this?
First, make sure your hosting company is reliable. How would they handle problems such as major hard disk crash? Check out forums for reviews and opinions by past and current customers.
Have a contingency plan to help you get up on your feet as soon as possible after a major hosting problem. Perhaps consider a second server, or host your sites on several different web server companies.
Back up your site frequently, save a full copy of your site and its database locally in your local hard drive. If possible, have another copy kept at an offsite location.
If you are running a blog, back it up NOW using WordPress Database Backup. Use the email function to have one backup copy emailed to you and another one saved in your computer hard disk.
It’s a pity this has to happen because of other people’s mistake. Let’s hope LiewCF.com will be back as soon as possible.
