32 Ways to Promote Your Website

Posted on 19th June, 2006

Dr. Ralph F. Wilson of Web Marketing Today has updated The Web Marketing Checklist: 32 Ways to Promote Your Website. This year it has 32 ways instead of 31.

The list includes new advice to keep up with changes in the fast-moving world of Internet marketing. You can read the updated 19-page Web Marketing Checklist in HTML format as an article or PDF format as an e-book.

If you have been involved with web promotion for a while, you’re probably doing many of the techniques already. Nevertheless, it’ll still make a great refresher.

If you are a newbie, the list will tell more or less everything you need to know about Internet promotion. While they’re not exactly breaking any new ground, they’ve tried to summarize some of the most important techniques that you should know.

The list is divided into six sections:

  1. Search Engine Strategies
  2. Linking Strategies
  3. Traditional Strategies
  4. Email. Strategies
  5. Miscellaneous Strategies
  6. Paid Advertising Strategies

While I agree with most of the points under each strategy, I can’t help but think some of them are a little outdated if not impractical.

Point 9 under the Search Engine Strategies, the author suggested the use of an automated software program, the WebPosition.

In the past many SEO’s placed a lot of emphasis on techniques like frequency, keyword density , prominence and proximity .They would spend hours analyzing web pages, in an attempt to understand the effect of each of these factors on a page.

WebPosition is one of the automated software which attempted to crack the code and had made analyzing web pages faster and much easier. I’ve purchased and used the software in 1998 to help me with my SEO campaigns. It used to work very well for me where I managed to get 3000 to 5000 thousands visitors from Google into my brand new site in a matter of weeks it went online.

Then in late 2003, Google unleashed the famous Florida update , which fundamentally changed the way they ranked pages. This update forced a lot of SEO’s to throw out many of the ideas they had about search engine optimization. After this update, more attention was focused on writing quality content and link building, than to magic keyword optimization formulas.

This time around, I think WebPosition is nothing more than a fancy tool to help you analyze web pages, but it does not guarantee you to rank well in the search engine result pages (SERPs). Your time would be better spent on building quality content and getting inbound links.

Point 13 under the Link Strategies, the author suggests the use of Zeus and Arelis, two automated link building software.

I’ve purchased and used Zeus before. The problem with link building software is that they place more emphasis on building the largest number of links in the shortest amount of time possible. Unnatural increase in the number of inbound links into your website will definitely raise the search engines’ red flag especially for Google.

In addition, these software help you maintain a link directory and in theory this looks like fun but do you really want to create a directory of links or a real website?

The author correctly point out not to send impersonal automated bulk e-mail to site owners. At this point, most site owners are savvy enough to realize that emails with link exchange requests are rarely hand-crafted with love.

Instead of exchanging links, lots of site owners forward the unsolicited emails to Google.

As Matt Cutts the Google Engineer writes in his blog, the best links are not paid, or exchanged after out-of-the-blue emails–the best links are earned and given by choice.
