Can You Run Competing Contextually Targeted Ads Alongside AdSense After The Latest Policy Update?

The recent AdSense Policies update has caused some confusion among AdSense publishers. This section in particular makes many publishers question whether they are allowed to run competitive contextual ads such as YPN on their site.

In order to prevent user confusion, we do not permit Google ads or search boxes to be published on websites that also contain other ads or services formatted to use the same layout and colors as the Google ads or search boxes on that site. Although you may sell ads directly on your site, it is your responsibility to ensure these ads cannot be confused with Google ads.

You see, the specific reference to contextually targeted ads is absent from the new policy. So the general assumption is that publishers can run contextually targeted ads such as Yahoo Publisher Network along side AdSense ads, as long as their appearances do not look like that of AdSense ads.

The AdSense Terms & Conditions which is different from AdSense’s Policies if you don’t know that already clearly states that

If You have elected to receive content or Site-based Ads, You further agree not to display on any Serviced Page any non-Google content-targeted advertisement(s).

So there you have it, you are still not allowed to run other competing contextually targeted ads on the same page where AdSense ads are served.

Yesterday, I came across a post from blogger about the new AdSense policy. Her understanding was that, you are no longer allowed to run ads from AdBrite, Clicksor, Chitika, Amazon, CJ and several others because if you were to blend these ads into your post, they would look awfully similar to AdSense.

But why would you want these ads to look like AdSense ads when they do not look like AdSense in the first place? Not that it’s her fault to think so (the blending part I mean), as she said, it’s a case of information overload. 🙂

To be successful, each program requires a unique approach in its promotion techniques. Not all ads need to be blended into the blog post like AdSense. Ads from affiliate programs such as CJ or Amazon.com do not pay you per click. You only get paid when the visitor makes a purchase or perform a certain action.

Therefore, you’ll be more successful in such programs when you make their ads stand out, or give them a prominent mention in you blog or site. Unlike Google AdSense, you can put images next to them to attract attention.

Some programs even allow you to incentivized the offer, that’s awarding your visitors to take advantage of the offer. You can even say “click here and help me make money!”

So yes, CJ, Amazon.com etc is still good to go with AdSense ads.
