Find Out If Advertisers Are Targeting Your AdSense Unit

When an advertiser is willing to purchase advertising at your blog, it says something about your ability to manage it properly.

Obviously, from the advertisers’ point of view, you are doing something right in that they feel you are offering an appropriate place to run their campaign where it could attract a highly relevant audience for their message.

As far as AdSense site-targeted ads are concern, they are pay per impression based ads. You are paid for displaying these ads on you pages which is different from pay per click ads.

Knowing that someone is interested enough to specifically target your site can be quite exciting and motivating especially if you don’t see this happens everyday.

Site targeted CPM ads can be a good source of incremental revenue, although from my experience that could take some time to accumulate – still it’s a source of ad revenue.

In some cases it can be a useful “filler ads” when higher paying contextually targeted (pay per click) ads are in short supply especially when you are getting a lot of cheap site targeted CPM ads.

So how do you find out if advertisers are using site targeting to target your AdSense units?

Just follow these simple steps.

  1. Login to your AdSense account, click on the ‘ Advance Reports ‘ sub tab under the ‘ Reports ‘ tab.
  2. Under the ‘ Show data by [?] ‘ option, select ‘ Individual Ad ‘, then check the ‘ Show data by targeting type – contextual or site [?]’
  3. This will generate a report as usual, and a new column will appear providing details about the type of ad targeting displayed on your pages.

You should be able to see something like the following.



If you are viewing the report by domain, you can see which ad units are site or/and contextually targeted.


As you can see the impression for Site targeted ads at Sabahan.com is quite low. That’s because they can’t compete with the Contextual ads with usually have a very good eCPM

    So, er…actually, which is better? Contextual ads or Site ads?

      In term of CPM contextual ads are usually better. But as your blog or site becomes more mature, you’ll get more site targeted ads which will push your average cpm up.

    LOL! Thanks. It’s still a bit greek to me as I am not really a techie. But I do notice more contextual ads than site targeted ads.
