Google launched Web page creator

Last modified on 28th February, 2006

Google has joined Yahoo to offer an online Web page creator. Still in beta, this service lets people create content, upload images and publish pages without the need to know HTML. People can create multiple linked pages and are allowed 100MB of storage on the service. The pages are hosted on Google servers and can be accessed via http://yourgmailusername.googlepages.com.

The main different between this service with other provider is that Google allows you to create pages, not a site. According to Google online documentation:

A page is a single document with its own web address, for example, http://yourgmailusername.googlepages.com/myferret. A site is a collection of pages with a common subdomain (the “yourgmailusername.com” portion). A “page” is like a page in a book, while a “site” is like the entire book; all your pages belong to a single site, which can contain as many pages as you’d like.

You’ll likely be able to create new site when the testing period ends.

In a technical term, it’s a AJAX web-publishing application using WYSIWYG front end. There are several templates and page formats to work from and the final layout doesn’t have to be in a blog format.

PC World has a quick rundown on the service at their site.
