Google Updates Algorithm

Posted on 8th June, 2007

People tend to think that Google update their search engine algorithm a few times every few months. However the New York Times article published recently reveals that changes are made more like a few times every week.

The recent algorithm updates have affected one of my sites significantly. I found that I am back on the first page of Google search result page for one single and rather competitive keyword.

I had previously been ranked on page 1 for a couple of years but it dropped to page 2 before being pushed further to page 3.

Lucky for me this trend reverted back to its initial condition.

The PR of the website dropped from 6 to 5 but I don’t really mind as this is offset by the improvement in ranking.

I can’t point out what I did exactly to trigger this improvement. I can only assume that we have started to update the site more frequently and exchange links with other credible sites – which we have been doing all the time anyway. Other reason may be because of the improved importance of other pages linking to the website which in turn, improved its own ranking.

The website that I am talking about is located at http://www.absolutelyfreebies.com. It’s currently ranked number 8 in Google for the keyword “freebies”.

If you think it’s only because of the word “freebies” in the domain name that causes it to rank highly for that keyword, you are wrong. Notice that the first and second sites on the list do not contain the keyword in their domain name.

Remember, Google is using over 200 factors to rank a page and keyword in the domain is just one of them.

Great info and discussion as always. I just wish I know someone inside the google office that works in this algorithm. That would make my life easy 😀

This is why I think it’s more important to focus on what Google is trying to achieve rather than how one could find a loophole in Google’s algorithm that will surely disappear in the future.

Research shows that it is better to aim for long tail keywords instead of one primary keywords. Long tail keywords tend to bring more traffic from search engines in the long run.

I think in the current competitive scenario, it better to diversify the keywords.

Of course. The purpose of this post is just to demonstrate that Google is updating its algorithm recently.

It focuses on just ONE minute details of the website’s SEO effort. I can talk about the long tail keywords that generates thousands of dollars monthly for that website but that’s for another post 🙂

Actually people tend to get confused between the “search algos” and “PR algos” of Google. Anyway, both algos are updated constantly. Google has to do that, this is their business!

“PR export” on the other hand, is a different matter altogether. Yep, this process happens roughly once every quarter. Most people mistaken this as “PageRank update”.

On an unrelated note, if you want that web site to rank higher for that keyword, give me a shoutout Gaman 🙂

      I agree.

I think getting on the first page for a single competitive dictionary keyword is good enough.

I would be hard-pressed if I try to achieve that today.

Now it’s up to Google if they want to rank me higher. I can get higher if you could get me links from freebie sites with PR5 and above hehe. But one thing I learn since 1998, you can’t guarantee ranking.
