How Long Does It Take You To Write a Blog Post?

Posted on 31st October, 2007

Some bloggers may have the natural ability to write posts faster than their readers could read them. I guess I am somewhere in the middle, I might be able type a tad faster than the average person but when it comes to completing a post, I usually need a few hours to do so.

Short posts that require no research usually take me less than 15 minutes. But I prefer to take my time when writing long posts that require a good deal of research. My problem is I often know what to write but deciding how to write it can consume most of my time.

So I spend more time thinking then actually writing down my thoughts. English being my second language (well technically it’s the third) doesn’t help either.

If I have a great post idea, I usually jot down the points I plan to write in my to-do list. I would continue to add points, sometimes over the course of a few days, before I actually sit down and write the whole post for a couple of hours. The researching part takes most of the time.

That’s how I come up with some posts like this

However for a topic that I know a lot about, I take about 3 to 5 hours to come up with the content and actually write it.

The past few weeks have been a busy time for me, on and offline. I’m launching new blogs and websites one after another. So that has been taking most of my time. I am also gearing up my pay per click campaigns to take advantage of the coming holiday shopping season in the US .

If you are not yet involved in affiliate program or PPC marketing, you are leaving a lot of money on the table.

Sadly, I have to scrap my previous goal to make US500 from text link ads monthly after the recent PageRank shake up. While I’ll continue to sell text link ads on some blogs, they are no longer my priority. If I make money from them, then that’s a bonus. Those blogs will be turned into a resource center for some of my PPC campaigns promoting affiliate programs.

It’s time to stop allowing Google PageRank dictates how much money you could make from your sites. You need to explore other monetization options and diversify your revenue streams in addition to writing paid posts or text link ads.

My only ad revenue that depends on PageRank is my text link ads. However, since I’ve been involved with affiliate marketing since 1997 and actively using pay per click marketing since 2002, PageRank has little importance to me as far as making money from the Internet is concern.

If you depend on your blogs to make money, you can start looking into selling advertising inventory directly from your website. I am seeing this practice becoming more common these days where more popular blogs such as DoshDosh.com, JohnChow.com and even ProBlogger.net are jumping into the bandwagon.

Anyway, back to the earlier question, how long does it take you to write a blog post?

  • eshark says:

Depends very much on how you like people to read it and how well you understand the topic that you’re goin to write. I normally wrote supported with some few pics since I wrote bout designs + travelblog. Research also very important but it do takes some of your time.

The longest I’ve been was 2 hours and the fastest would be 10 minutes.

  • AhBoon says:

It can be from 1 hour to 2 weeks :p
Some posts need lots of research and finding… and of course, it is depends on my Kerajinan.

  • titan says:

Depend on the situation. SOmetimes 10 or 15 minutes. The long time i take its half an hour.

  • david says:

Take hours for me because I will write a bit and then leave it at that until I think of the next paragraph! Then for proofreading, I would read it 5-10 times and then edit it to make it flow nice and easy! That takes a another hour or two!

  • dicky says:

I normally will take an hour to complete 1 post. Because i will do some research from internet. And this probably is because i am new to blogging too……

  • Ed Kohler says:

I usually write posts in around 10-15 minutes. However, it can take hours of reading to find an appropriate and timely topic to write about.

  • I’m a really slow blogger. My main posts usually take 2-3 huors each. Even a links post at the weekend takes around an hour because I take the time to write about the links.

  • For me, it takes only not more than 5 minutes to post a new blog posting. When I got the idea what to write, the posting will be much more faster.

Normally I jot down some idea on my PDA and only writes about in when there is a need to post it on my blogs.

  • anywhere from 10min to 2 hours. My latest one was pretty in depth and took me close to two hours to write.

  • Ades says:

    Sometimes up to 3 hours…

  • TechMalaya says:

that depends on a post. for howto post like Install WordPress on Local Apache Web Server it took me a few hours for testing and blogging it.

  • Kay Kastum says:

As fast as 5 minutes as long as 2 hours for me.

  • Sabochii says:

writing for blog seems quite easy for me…but editing n providing the accurate font type, size n allignment seems very tedious…..neways my frnds manage to help me out.

  • It takes me less than 5-10 minutes to write a post on my blogs, I write very fast! You do need content for any website, and if you have many websites, if you dont write fast, you cant catch up with the competition.

  • 20 min to write a short post is fast. Even native English speakers probably take more time.

Writing quality content like you do brings traffic and that all you need to make money from your blog.

Just get organized to accept direct advertizing and have some products to sell yours or affiliate products.

  • shy guy says:

    Don’t have specific time…
Just write and try to find ending…
    maybe 20-30 minutes

  • Andrew Ooi says:

It takes me about 10-15 minutes for a post but I have a bad habit of reading it after it is posted and re-editing it multiple times 😀

  • Wahlau.NET says:

video post is short…but if detail…it takes more than 1 hour

  • Tim says:

Sometime takes me a day to write a quality post!

    –blog for dream–

  • dott-com says:

30-45 minute enough for some small post. Take hour for certain topic – mostly if talk about blogging post. like wayne say I also make some draft before any post goes online.

  • helen says:

Rants are the easiest to write. It’s spontaneous. But then the final spelling check is inevitable. 🙂

  • Wayne Liew says:

Beginners Guide to Making Money On the Internet link failed to work for me.

I prewrite my posts 3 days before posting and I have lots of draft saved in my laptop. I used days to complete a post but if it was something instant like the Google PR update or review of a new blogging service, 30 minutes will do.

  • I usually take up to 30 minutes for most posts, but more in depth articles, and those which I want to hopefully become very popular on social bookmarking sites can take upto 2 hours.

  • Philip says:

Well i take pretty long to complete an entry. usually 15 minutes for a pretty short entry. Guess i needa improve by blogging more often!

  • vangardx says:

    i take around 15-30minutes per entry..and 5-10minutes for picture editing 😀

  • pinolobu says:

As you said, depends on some factors. Some topics take many hours to research and write. But once I start on something, I usually make sure it gets published on the same day.

  • Alb says:

For proper English grammar post, it will take the longer a day for me to write. Looking on some correct words on thesaurus and dictionary, and proofread it by me, sometimes by somebody (:hehe:).

It is better if there are good sites for me on how to write good posts, articles etc. Any idea? Links? 😀

  • superhero W says:

For my blog, my girlfriend and I will write for the blog. But, she usually come out with a good writing.

I think she also take 15-20minutes to make a post. But plus 5 minutes for me to edit it and maybe put some photos.
( I am some kind of the technical director la 😀 )
