Is MSN Spaces the largest blogging service?

Posted on 27th May, 2006

Apparently that’s the case according to a recent press release by Microsoft.

MSN® Spaces is the most widely used blogging service worldwide with more than 100 million unique visitors, according to data released today by comScore Networks Inc. of Reston, Va., an independent Internet audience measurement and consulting company.

comScore World Metrix’s proprietary audience report for April 2006 showed the total number of unique visitors to MSN Spaces has more than doubled in the past 12 months, from 41.65 million to 101 million.* Figures compiled by comScore Media Metrix indicate that during April 2006, nearly one in seven Internet users worldwide had visited MSN Spaces.

It’s hard to believe that it even surpasses Blogger.com if this statistics is correct.

Is anybody here using MSN Spaces as their main blogging platform?

MSN Spaces can be found at http://spaces.msn.com.

My surprise was due to contradicting facts I found from the recent post I wrote recently here.

According to comScore Networks, Web properties such as Blogger.com and MySpace are gaining market shares faster than others. The number of monthly visitors to Blogger.com rose 528 percent between February 2005 and February 2006. the number of people posting or reading material at that site jumped to 15.6 million last month from 2.5 million a year ago.

There’s no mention about MSN Spaces at all as the top ranked sites growing the most.

In addition, I find the stats given my Microsoft is a little bit strange. MSN-Microsoft Sites had received 120,261,000 visitors according to the recently released Top 50 Properties by comScore. Apparently 101 million of those visits went to MSN Spaces, that means only 19 million unique visitors have visited other Microsoft properties.

That is to say that MSN Spaces has suddenly became the most popular Microsoft property in comparison to MSN.com, Live.com, Microsoft.com.

Now, that doesn’t make sense, does it?

  • […] Og jeg er ikke den eneste, der undrer sig/mig*: is msn spaces the largest blogging service? […]

  • Gaman says:

Yea on a worldwide basis, that’s possible considering there are 33 million Chinese bloggers already even more than the Malaysia population.

But I think Bokee.com is the biggest Chinese blog website in terms of number of subscribers and website traffic.

And 8/10 result at technorati come from MySpace.com not MSN Spaces. MSN Space probably got the traffic, but not the content.

  • ShaolinTiger says:

    Sadly I’d have to agree.

Look at technorati, for 8/10 results, they will be msn spaces, followed by livejournal, blogspot results rare are pretty rare.

Also most of the big Chinese/Taiwan/Korean blogs are on msn spaces, due to the proper language support.

Check out the top 100 list, a few are chinese language blogs on msn spaces.

  • Gaman says:

What I really like to know is where the traffic is coming from.

One source: MSN Messenger! no wonder. There’s no mention about usage (i.e number of account) as compare to the other blogging platforms. How convinience right.

Edrei: The bigger picture is bigger than Technorati.

  • Edrei says:

It’s not hard to believe. I think I saw the statistics by technorati or something like that with MSN Spaces being first, followed by Livejournal and then Xanga. You got to look at it from the point that it’s a big world and not all Bloggers fit the definition of what we know in Malaysia. 🙂

    Hell yeah, messenger integration FTW!
