My experiment with blog advertising using BlogAds

Posted on 21st March, 2006

Today I purchased two blogads as an experimentation to promote my blogs. The purpose is to see if promotion through paid ads on other blogs is a viable way to bring in traffic into my new blogs. This is also an interesting opportunity for me to learn how this traffic converts into subscribers and how it’ll affect my blogs’ revenue potential.

One of the blogad advertises Sabahan.com at LiewCF.com and another one advertises OffbeatEnough.com at Kahsoon.com. These blogs are selected because they have good contents with reasonable amount of traffic and both belong to the same niche as my blogs.

Both blogads have been running for a couple of hours now and I can see that one of them is doing a much better job in term of traffic they bring in.

I think one of the reasons for this apparent performance discrepancy is because of the blogad placement in one of the blogs. Other factors that might affect performance include the design of the ad itself, and how the ad relates to the blog readers.

I do not expect the ad costs to pay off right away, but rather consider this as a learning experience in my effort to find the best way to promote my blogs. In term of costs, I think it’s not a lot of money to advertiser on these blogs for seven days. You never know until you give it a try.

I plan to do heavier promotion through paid ads besides other promotions should this experiment prove successful.

There’s a related blog entry at The Blog Herald entitled Promoting your blog the paying way

Just to quote:

In the past I’ve been critical of BlogAds because I just couldn’t see the value in them as an advertiser. I was wrong, but only partly wrong, because truth be told BlogAds doesn’t work for everyone. From watching advertisers and their ads here, as well as having advertised sites of my own using Adsense, this is what works best

– T&A, and the bustier the better
– T-Shirts/ Humor
– Gizmos when done properly
– relevant political and current affairs material

It would be interesting to see how this will apply into my own experiment. I’ll post the final result and findings about a week from now so watch this space!

PS: Do you like the ads design? I’ll write more about designing ads that get the clicks later.

I know I mentioned in one of my posts that I have a month old blog. Like most blogs, not many people would actually go digging the archive. So a blog age is not the deciding factor when to start an ad campaign. The frequency and quality of the posts are what make a blog useful. I noticed some old blogs which were started one or two years earlier only post an entry every 3 days or so, at that rate I am going to overtake them next months LOL.

If nothing else, this promotion gives a blog a good start right off the bat.

I know of a blog that had 5 posts only and managed to attract repeat visitors after being promoted by another blog, a traffic boost that otherwise, would take years to get. keyword here is “experiment”

If things continue at the current rate.. I think you’ll be surprise when I announce the result later next week. So watch this space!

Anyway, thanks for the feedback, appreciate it!

Getting your blog seen is one thing, retaining the traffic is one thing.

If your blog lacks the credibility to convert the ads traffic to repeat visitors, then the ads $ are wasted.

Your blog does have contents.. but I feel that it’s a bit too new to start off any ads campaign.

    Just my 2 cents.
