Several days ago the AdWords team introduces a new feature which could help clarify some of what is going on behind the scenes in the click-fraud detection battle.

This new feature displays the “invalid clicks” and “invalid clicks rate” in your AdWords reporting which will show all the invalid clicks affecting an account.

These clicks are filtered in real-time by our systems before advertisers are charged for them. The resulting data will of course differ from one advertiser to the next. In addition, a much smaller number of invalid clicks may also be credited to advertisers’ accounts after-the-fact, as the result of a publisher being terminated from the AdSense program for invalid click activity. These will appear as account-level credits.

I ran a report for the month of Jun to include the “Invalid Clicks” and “Invalid Clicks Rate” metrics for my campaigns and was surprised to find that the rate range from 2.55 percent to 4.92 percent with an average of 2.5 percent. Of course the percentage will be different from others. Some niche might experience higher or lower Invalid Clicks Rate than others.

The invalid clicks cost $12.32 for the months of July. That’s lower than my typical month which is around $30. I actually see my invalid clicks rate dropping for these past few months.

At the same time, I see my cost per click remains steady or slightly reducing and my conversion rates remain steady or increasing slightly.

Is this a sign that Google is finally winning the click-fraud battle? I don’t know but I am certainly happy to see things are improving, so far.

More information about the new reporting option can be found here.
